1984 vs. Brave new world
In the novels 1984 by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the two societies seem to be in a state of perfect harmony, due to the absence of world hunger, and, although there is still war in 1984, a very promising future. The societies in both novels are very similar in the way that hierarchies and castes exist, as well as the common theme of population control. However, the two societies also have their differences, such as the way they are maintained, or what actions are taken to keep the populations under control. It soon becomes clear that the common desire between the societies of the novels is to achieve and maintain a world where no one is poor or hungry, and qualities such as good looks and wealth are common to everyone. It is also clear that in both novels, these perfect societies have been achieved, and will be maintained at any cost. There are also different ways that the leading parties (the Party in 1984 and the Controllers in Brave New World) dealt with sex in the communities. In 1984, promiscuous sex was considered a sin and wrong by all means. According to the Party the only "right sex" was sex for the party, where the only purpose was for reproduction. However, unlike Winston, Bernard was close to achieving his goal, as he is already smarter and smaller than the average Alpha Plus. This only made it easier for the Controllers, as individuals became very easy to control through intense conditioning. " Too little bone had isolated Bernard from his fellow men, and the sense of apartness, being a mental excess, became in its turn a cause of wider separation. Sex simply for the purpose of bearing a child was unheard of, because there are no real families, only individuals. This is because, patients would start being controlled from birth, through conditioning and hypnopaedia. This shows that world control in both stories was gained through changing the social patterns of the populations. Even though the citizens in 1984 did not feel as though they were being controlled, in reality they had been controlled their entire lives. The most significant difference between the two societies is the way that they became controlled. Both characters have the common goal of "breaking free" from society, trying to gain their own individualality. They have both come close to reaching a perfect society, and they have both managed to create a population almost entirely loyal and obedient towards their governments. However, soma only proved to result in boring, uninteresting people, because it does not allow people to deal with their own problems, which is the main building block of a person's character. They would also consume large amounts of soma throughout their lives, minimizing stress and fear in the patients, therefore reducing the chances of any sort of rebellion.
