Stereotypes in America

             Racial stereotypes are everywhere around us in America today, whether it's a quick comment by a coworker or an outspoken racial group protesting on the streets of Washington, DC, in our progressive society, racial tension still exists all our community. Considering America today is still thought of as a diverse group of individuals that make our society great yet it still has a certain underlining stereotype towards different minority groups. The 1920's could only be a world of hate and prejudice towards any non-white American if one compared it to the 21st century, many of the literature that was written was praising White America and breaking down the minorities. Sui Sin Far's story, "The Story of One White Woman Who Married a Chinese", breaks all normal opinion of the time regarding Chinese men and instead Far is praising the Chinese man rather than criticizing and poking fun of a different culture compared to the Americans. Far challenges any type of idea that White America thought of the Chinese and does so very abruptly.
             "The Story of One White Woman Who Married a Chinese" is a look into a white woman's life who marries a Chinese man, Liu Kanghi, after being in a very emotionally abusive marriage with her white husband, James. James was constantly questioning his wife's motivates and constantly bringing her down when she tried to please him or learn new ideas. The narrator remembers her husband coming home "a little earlier than usual, and found me engaged in trying to work out problems in subtraction and addition. He laughed sneeringly "Give it up Minnie, he said, "You weren't built for anything but taking care of kids" (68) James is shown as being a sexist towards his wife but also a hypocrite since he is an activist in Woman's Rights Movement and social reform, trying to create a more equal society for everyone, yet he is constantly bringing ...
