The meaning of the word
Torah is a Hebrew word meaning instruction, teaching and particularly law. For the Jewish people, the torah is what they think about first when they think of the Hebrew bible. The Torah primarily refers to the Tanakh which corresponds to the first five books of the Hebrew bible. These books are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The Jewish community do not talk in terms of belief; they tell stories about themselves and establish laws and norms that shape their lives. The Torah is seen as a Jewish story. These stories were accepted by the Jews and were told to be true stories that tell them how things
These explanations were first done orally and came to be known as the oral law. However, it would eventually be written down commencing the second century of our era because it was the only way to assure that it would be preserved. The Rabbis believe that the torah delivers a message of great importance but that it needs to be properly interpreted for the people to understand the lessons without any doubt. As a result, The Rabbis created a series of writings on Jewish law which was known as the Mishnah. Therefore, the torah has been the constitution of the Jews and represents law. Therefore, they needed to explain to the Jews the meaning of the terms used in the bible. Therefore, the Torah talks about the Jewish people and tells them what they are to do and how they are to express themselves as Jews. It was accepted by the Jew's from around 15 to 12 hundred years B. According to the Jew's, though we do not know specifically when, they suppose the Torah was given to them by God from Moses. The many different stories found in the Torah define the realities of the Jews and who they are. Later these texts would be edited to become part of what we refer today as the Talmud or the Midrash. It was forbidden to write down the oral law at the time because they feared that it would leave the Jewish people in doubt on how to interpret the writings.
