A Raisin in the Sun Character Ananlysis
The play A Raisin in the Sun was written by Lorraine Hansberry in 1959. The play takes place in Chicago sometime after World War II. The play is basically about a black family in Chicago who received a check for $10,000.00 in insurance money. The mother wants to use it to buy a house, but the son wants to use the money to buy a liquor store. The selfish son wants to use it to follow his dreams and the mother wants to use it for something that will benefit the whole house. In the end the mother buys the house. This play relates to deferred dreams by a black family has dreams but no way of achieving them.Walter Lee Younger is the main character in the play. He is selfish, money hungry, controlling and an angry man. Walter has a bad relationship with the rest of his family. He never listens to his wife when it comes to important things that will affect the rest of the family. He always puts his sister down and tells her that she shouldn't be a doctor because that's a man's job and she needs to stay in a woman's place and be a nurse. Some of Walter's frustrations with l
Beneatha is Mama's daughter (Walter's sister) she is a very independent person, believes that there is no god and that one should be proud about their African heritage. She controls everything that goes on in the house. This goes along with the theme of afrocentrism because Beneatha doesn't want to act like the white society she wants to embrace her African heritage and learn more about it. Joseph Asagai also makes a comment about how Beneatha mutilates her hair so eventually Beneatha cuts off all her hair into a little afro just like they do in Africa. Walter is a chauffeur he wants to be the one in the back seat and not the one who is driving around the white man. Mama tells Beneatha that there will always be a god as long as you're living under my roof, and she makes Beneatha say "in my mother's house there is a god. He has a frustration with white society because the white people want all the blacks to stay in the one area and not make anything of themselves and be successful. Beneatha wants to be a doctor which during that time period was a "man's job" and women are nurses. He stops thinking only about his self, but about the rest of the family. Mama is Godly, has strong morals, loves her family and is a tyrant at times. I also think that the readers might learn that the dreams that you have aren't necessarily the right dreams for you. He cares more about his family and decides that the Youngers will buy the house. Mama also known as Lena Eggleston Younger is the head of the household. Beneatha didn't want to be a nurse and this goes along with the theme of feminism because Beneatha didn't care what society says and she was going to do whatever she wanted to do even if it was a "man's job.
