Change my Neighborhood-- The Bronx
Although the inner city of New York has its many positive aspects such as a good baseball team and great ethnic food, many people hold negative stereotypes concerning how "the people" may act or the violence involved. When I say "the people", I am referring to New Yorkers because it is well known that they are put under a category: They are rude, pushy, mean and live in a place where they get mugged in a train station every night. The fact is this is how many people might view where I am from but the problem that lies in it is why do people feel this way? Why is it that when I tell someone where I am from they automatically think I'm in a gang or that I have seen someone get shot many times. I would sincerely want to change these stereotypical views because it is portraying a beautiful city, one in which I am proud to be from, to be a crime factory. Maybe someone would not notice the living conditions residing outside New York City, but being born and raised in the Bronx, I pretty much know what the city is about and the troubles that may or may not occur. I traveled to many states also, so my mind is not narrow and accustomed to what is only in my city. Often when I do travel and people ask me where I am from and I tell them, t
This does not happen all of the time but it does happen enough to bother me. Therefore, the people can create a town of their liking and not have a waste of space. Negative stereotypes about New York need to be changed so it can stop hurting people emotionally. That is the main concept that needs to get out. New York was not even on the list for violence or killings. She was from a small town on Oklahoma. People are sometimes confined to their own living space. The Bronx has so much to offer: There are so many volunteer community centers, shopping areas are everywhere, and it is the hometown of Yankee Stadium and the best baseball team ever! Children cannot be afraid of that. The media plays a big part in this misconception. For so long people get accustomed to one idea that it is hard to get out of their heads. In high school, my Political Science class was discussing the same issue about stereotypes in New York City. Of course the people of the Bronx are not rich, but their heart is there and that is what should matter the most. A person who is very narrow minded might not have the same views I have but I feel that I am very open-minded and share a lot of culture: I am of Jamaican descent and have traveled to many states. It was sad that it had to take a tragedy that happened on September 11th to show the world that New Yorkers can come together. Wherever children may go, they have to be careful of violence, not only when they visit a particular place.
