Matina Horner discusses her idea, which she calls “motive to avoid success”, as one-problem females have in which they fail on purpose. Success is an outcome women are afraid of. The first aspect of the motive is the social aspect. Females are afraid of success because of social reasons and problems that may arise out of success. When competition between opposite sex is present, especially for success, women often will back down and let the male party absorb the success. Last Horner did a test in which they used actual situations for testing. Those females who are succeeding against males and are not concerned with social aspect are those who want more than just that little success. Those that did simply denied the existence or denied the success. The second group would be girls not so much concerned with social acceptance, but with becoming more in touch with their “femininity or normality” (Horner 400). Nobody wants to be the outsider, but nobody wants to intentionally fail so they won’t become the outsider.
Through Horner’s tests, she develops three main categories in which women fall into under certain situations, which include competition for success against a male partner. heir pride, which is worth more to them than most other fixations in life. On the other hand those who had a fear of success did better under pressure in the competition situations and did not do well working alone.
