Increasing Grades Through Competition
Teacher use many methods of teaching that try to get students to improve their grades and not always settling for that C, D, or F. No method is better then using competition to try to improve the not so talented students. This method does have its side effects though. Students who are competing may be more at risk to cheat. They may try very hard to improve but don't. Therefore their self-esteem is lowered and they don't improve at all, or worse their grades fall. Peer pressure also plays a role. Students who are improving or who get straight A's may give out negative peer pressure in an attempt to help a less talented peer improve. Negative pressure will happen but can be simply avoided, teachers just have to keep and eye open and make sure it doesn't happen, it is as simple as that. They will be forced to learn, which will improve grades making their class happy. Cheating is not a big problem with this method of learning. Fellow teachers and parents will notice this and thank them for doing their jobs and making a difference in the lives of their students. This method can be compared to sports, and how a team has to pressure their teammates to do well so they can win and improve. All in all competition for grades will help students with improving their grades though use of peer pressure. I think that the pros of this method outweigh the cons and it can help students learn more and increase their grades. You could say that cheating can be a problem as well. Although this method does have its negative effects, I think competition for grades is more good then bad. Their teacher satisfied and most importantly themselves. Competition against a student's peers can increase the student's grade dramatically. If they do, students know that can't just cheat to relieve this pressure and help their class win this competition. This should not be too hard on a teacher; they are trying to teach students and will do almost anything to make them learn. It will peer pressure students to do well on their tests, quizzes and daily work.
