Buddhism and Abortion: Global Impact of Abortion

             Abortion is a very sensitive subject no matter where you go in the world. Arguments have been made for or against abortion by many groups from religious to feminists. All and all abortion has been very controversial in many people's minds. Buddhism is one religion that has surfaced in the abortion issue. Buddhism is an ancient institution which has distinguished ideas and principles. Buddhism is an influential religion across eastern and central Asia. Buddhism is grabbing the attention of the West and its beliefs are now being heard on the topic of abortion. Abortion is a very severe maladroit act that forces violence on an innocent, unborn child (Florida). If you look at abortion in this way Buddhism is very connected. Abortion involves three root drives of unskilled men and women in Buddhism: greed, hatred, and delusion (Florida). Greed is the act of abortion, meaning thinking of them only rather than the unborn child. Hatred is going through with the act of killing their pain. The last root, delusion, would be denying that a living thing was growing inside them and still going through the act (Florida).
             Chamberlain states in his article, "Abortion is not regarded as a "good," but rather as a regrettable or necessary evil" (Chamberlain). Buddhism is strongly against killing no matter what the form is so it would be understandable that Buddhism would not support abortion but that seems to be not true. Buddhism deals with life. There are many stages of life in Buddhism; the cycle of birth and death are just one of the many stages and not predetermined events (Chamberlain). Buddhism accepts abortion in a way. In Buddhism they do not see an abortion as the ending of an unborn child's life but as a way of telling people that the spirit of the unborn child needs to be returned to the Buddhas for its birth at a later time (Chamberlain).
