A Rose For Emily

A Rose For Emily depicts a picture of an archaic Southern social order. The social hierarchy that once defined a society has mutated into a mere anachronism represented by Emily Grierson. William Faulkner uses symbolism to convey what would be impossible wit ha more direct approach.
One of the largest evidence of symbolism lies in the description of the edifice in which Emily Grierson resides in. The structure's change parallels Emily's change. The house is described as once "white" and "the most select [on the] street". The term "most select" corresponds with Emily's character as perceived by the townspeople. Faulkner even goes so far as to mention that the "whole town went to her funeral." The act on the behalf of the townsfolk cements the fact that Emily was part of the "most select." The terms used in description of the edifice have a dual purpose. They describe Emily's stature in the social order that makes up the south as well as set the relationship between the house and Emily.
Emily's home is described in a location such that "garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated even the august names of that neighborhood; only Miss Emily's house was left." The house's surroundings changed though the edifice has hung on to its original stature, it is the sole remaining piece from the era, just as Emily has became callously attached to the past embodied in both personality and status just as she was years prior. Emily's deep-rooted persona is further reinforced when the local authorities are attempting to collect taxes past due:
Her voice was dry and cold. "I have no taxes in Jefferson. Colonel Sartoris explained it to me. Perhaps one of you can gain access to the city records and satisfy yourselves."
"But we have. We are the city authorities, Miss Emily. Didn't you get a notice from the sheriff, signed by him?"
