Alexander The Great
What made Alexander III so great? I have beeninterested in Alexander III since I learned of in him in theforth grade. Alexander was a great military and politicalgenius who should not be forgotten. Many of his actionshave affected us today. That may be hard to believe since Alexander III was the son of Philip II, king ofMacedonia. Alexander was brought up as the crown prince. From the begining he was destined to be a great king. Histeacher was none other than Aristotle. Under his tutelageAlexander acquired a great love for Homer. He was truly astudent of the heroic age. His mother was Olympias untilPhilip divorced her for a younger princess. This estrangedAlexander and his father. It became so bad that Alexanderfled. Although, he was later allowed to return, he remainedisolated and insecure until Philip's mysteriousassassination around June 336 BC. Some historians believethat Alexander played a role in the assassination. This isall speculation since it happened so many years ago. After his fathers death Alexander was at once presentedto the army as king. This was huge for Alexander. Winningits support he at once eliminated all potential riv
The oracle certainly hailed him as Amon's sonand may have promised him that he would become a god. Alexander's faith in Amon kept increasing, and after hisdeath he was portrayed with the god's horns. During this time though, Alexander was deeply worried abouta major uprising in Greece. Alexander entered Egypt in 331 BC, after he had marcheddown the Phoenician coast. Darius was at once assassinated by Bessus, thesatrap of Bactria, who distrusted his will to keep fightingand proclaimed himself king. During this time some ofthe heaviest fighting and bloodiest massacres of the waroccured. During this time, Alexander's increasinglyOriental behavior led to trouble with the Macedonian noblesand some Greeks. When he arrived, he was welcomedand taken as pharaoh. Resistance byMacedonian officers and by the Greek Callisthenes, who was anephew of Aristotle, defeated the attempt. Alexander nextcommanded that the Europeans follow the Oriental etiquetteof prostrating themselves before the king. While Alexander remained in Egypt heexchanged letters with Darius. He was also able to gain the allegiance of theMacedonian nobles. In the spring of 324,Alexander and 80 of his close associates married Iranianwomen. In late 330 BC, Parmenion'soldest son, Philotas commander of the cavalry and chiefopponent of the king's new policies, was eliminated in acarefully staged coup d'etat and Parmenion was assassinated. He wasinspired to choose its site by his personal interpretationof a scene from Homer's Odyssey.
