Erin McGraw's Bad Eyes

             Bad Eyes is a story about how a poor, disabled woman came to deal with her problem, and eventually overcome it. Erin McGraw presents to the reader, as best she can, her story, and in a meager twelve pages examines how she came to live with her terrible, ever worsening eyesight. She never asks the reader to pity her, only to understand her and her problems. She takes the reader on a journey throughout her life, and places him in the moment. McGraw has a unique ability to use details and descriptive prose to fully convey her emotions to the reader and to thoroughly draw him into the moment. Ultimately, she wants the reader to understand exactly how she felt at any given time. In order to do so, she draws upon specific events from each time period to express her feelings at the time. Also, throughout all of this, McGraw uses extraordinarily descriptive language that gives each detail in her story unique character. McGraw succeeds in her goal, flawlessly weaving in her descriptive writing style to tell the most meaningful story of her life. Although not implied by the author, she successfully proves to the reader that if she could overcome her extreme difficulties, then he could as well.
             In writing Bad Eyes, Erin McGraw never had a specific reader in mind. She was trying to reach everyone, and share her story with anyone willing to listen. While McGraw's had been very severe, everyone has to deal with a problem like hers sooner or later in life. McGraw knows this, and is just attempting to provide a little insight on how to tackle a problem that may seem helpless. McGraw could do nothing to stop the eventual breakdown of her eyesight, but she learned to live with her problem. Eventually, she even learned to overcome it.
