We have all heard the saying, "Change is inevitable" or "The only thing constant is change" Do you remember any changes that happened in your work center? How did you react? Not all changes in organizations go smoothly because there is resistance to change and the manager does not know how to deal with this resistance. Managers have to deal with change in their organization, managers are often the change agent, or, the person charged with making change happen. There are ways to handle change and to manage the change process rather than the change managing you.First, lets talk about the levels of change. There are four levels of change present in people; knowledge changes, attitudinal changes, behavioral changes and group or organizational performance change. The knowledge change process is usually the easiest to bring about because it may involve something as simple as reading a book or a new organization policy. Attitudes are more difficult to change because they are emotionally charged in either a positive or negative way. Reading a policy letter is one thing, but feeling good about is something else. Change is inevitable, it's going to happen sooner or later. Sometimes, habits stand in the way of this level. A good plan and being visible when the changes take place helps the manager in implementing his/her change plan. The Directive Change Cycle, and the Participative Change Cycle. In the Participative Change Cycle, participative change is implemented when new knowledge is made available to the individual or group. The norms that currently exist in the organization must be changed. If the manager can get the leaders and informal leaders to climb on board, the rest of the group will follow. Open communication can reduce uncertainty. The manager should help sell the importance of the change and explain its effects on people and jobs. You will find that during any change process, people normally fill three roles. Clearly you can see that by understanding the four levels of change and the change process, organizational changes can be implemented with success. The success of the change is dependent upon the group's positive attitude and commitment in the direction of the desired change. The manager will need to educate and inform people about their new responsibilities. Whatever the change is in an organization, the manager must recognize a need for change.
