Stereotypes of a Women

             In previous decades, women have lived under certain expectations: They would have children, they would raise those children, and they would perform the daily tasks of housekeeping. A woman's life was, in fact, restricted to only these functions. Unfortunately, today some members of society still perceive women as individuals operating under these same limited expectations. Therefore, women continue to be affected by stereotypes concerning motherhood, careers, and self-image.
             The first and most prominent stereotype of women is that they are seen strictly as housewives. They are supposed to clean the house, cook dinner, do the laundry, have the children and then take care of the kids. While the women tended to their domestic responsibilities, while the dominant male went out and did the masculine work. For example, the fairy tale Cinderella proved that women are told that if they be a good housewives and do what they are expected to do then they will be beautiful and desirable by all men. The Cinderella fairytale exemplifies that men didn't let women think for themselves. Men treated women like they were ignorant with no mind of their own. Men were "Stupid, unfeeling, obedient, soldierly and [heartless human beings to women]" (Theroux 233).
             Men certainly did not expect these so-called mindless women to work outside of the house, but women wanted to acquire jobs and to earn money of their own. Unfortunately, when women were offered employment jobs they weren't given good jobs because men believed that they couldn't handle traditionally masculine work. Men believed that women weren't strong enough or smart enough to work outside of the house such as being doctors or lawyers since men had traditionally worked those roles.
