Of Course I'm telling the truth

Lying is an indispensable part of our everyday lives. We lie because it is convenient. We

lie because we are afraid of what others might think of the truth. It is much easier to tell your friend that his new haircut looks fabulous than to tell him what you really think. Jerome K. Jerome said, “It is always the best policy to speak the truth–unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar.” To be an exceptional liar you must know how to lie effectively. An exceptional liar prepares mentally, uses detail, and practices in order to lie effectively.

The first step in lying effectively is to prepare yourself mentally. George Costanza, Sienfeild co-star, once said, “It’s not really a lie if you believe it.” If you can somehow convince yourself that you are telling the truth, then as far as your psyche is concerned, you are not a liar. Let’s use former President Bill Clinton as an example of how to mentally convince yourself that you are telling the truth. Clinton stated, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.” According to his testimony, “sexual relations” require a pleasuring from both parties, and since Ms. Lewinsky did all the pleasuring, he was comfortable in claiming that he did not have sexual relatio

An effective liar would say, “Tommy and I were over Billy’s house watching the playoffs. He has practiced so much that he could say his sales pitch in his sleep. It is a known fact that the more detail a story has the more likely someone is to believe it. It is hard work but, once mastered, it can be done. Usually, if you have to worry about making up details, you will forget to maintain your behavior and you will start to slip (stumble, fidget, smile, etc. Part of being mentally prepared is knowing what your baseline behavior is. It only matters if your behavior differs from the way you normally act. Practicing your lie will make it more effective. Even if there is substantial evidence against you, just remember that you are “right” and they are wrong. ”

The use of details is the next step in lying effectively. But most importantly, you must keep your details in your active memory for a reasonable period after the lie. A car salesman, for example, uses the same routine every day (ex. Now get out there and start telling the “truth!”
