Of Course I'm telling the truth

             Lying is an indispensable part of our everyday lives. We lie because it is convenient. We
             lie because we are afraid of what others might think of the truth. It is much easier to tell your friend that his new haircut looks fabulous than to tell him what you really think. Jerome K. Jerome said, "It is always the best policy to speak the truth–unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." To be an exceptional liar you must know how to lie effectively. An exceptional liar prepares mentally, uses detail, and practices in order to lie effectively.
             The first step in lying effectively is to prepare yourself mentally. George Costanza, Sienfeild co-star, once said, "It's not really a lie if you believe it." If you can somehow convince yourself that you are telling the truth, then as far as your psyche is concerned, you are not a liar. Let's use former President Bill Clinton as an example of how to mentally convince yourself that you are telling the truth. Clinton stated, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." According to his testimony, "sexual relations" require a pleasuring from both parties, and since Ms. Lewinsky did all the pleasuring, he was comfortable in claiming that he did not have sexual relations with her. The point is, if you can somehow convince yourself that you are telling the truth, then all of the psychological and physiological problems of lying disappear. Part of being mentally prepared is knowing what your baseline behavior is. Baseline behavior is the way you talk and behave when you are having a casual conversation in which no attempt at deception is taking place. Many people seem to believe that liars do not maintain eye contact, talk fast, and clear their throats often. But, it does not matter what you do when you lie.
