When I finished reading it, I realized that the story was a story within a story. The anonymous narrator was actually one of the men on the ship, Nellie, listening to Marlow telling his story. The story actually takes place on the boat on the Thames River.

It was a story of a man with experiences and perseverance.

Marlow, his crew, and Kurtz leave the Inner Station. the Company’s Central Station, where he learns that the steamboat he is supposed to pilot up the Congo was wrecked at the bottom of the river. Marlow used what he learned on this journey to break down the barriers inside him and become a better person. In actuality his last words were “The horror, the horror. As they leave the Inner station Kurtz becomes sick and dies. The manager hopes that the jungles will take Kurtz. He is relieved to find out that Kurtz is ok and that the natives that were attacking him were actually protecting Kurtz. The boat is fixed and Marlow starts his fifty-mile trek to the inner station and on his way his boat is being attacked. He finally sees her and tells her that his last words were her name.
