African Art

African Art does not have specific date to which it evolved because most early AfricanArt was carved in wood, which perished quickly. This is why most art dates from the19th and early 20th century. Many 20th century artists admired and collected pieces ofAfrican Art. They enjoyed the bold color, expression, and form that produced a newbeginning in art history. African Art was mostly dedicated to life affirming activitiessuch as healing, pleasure, protection, and transformation. The first African Art that madea sustained impact on Europe occurred with the bronze casing and ivory seized in 1897by the British Royal Army. It was then that African Art began to become in demand, andseen by all areas of the world. Recently, archaeological explorations have become themain contributors of African Art history. African Art is continuously evolving although the rate of change has varied fromtime to time and place to place. A specific word for art did not exist in languages ofmost traditional African people. Instead, they used a word to describe the making of theobject. African Art as been tied to political and religious aspects. Some mask typesinclude ancestral, sacrificial, avenging, protection, peace-making, and ritual. The entrances to these palaces were set with large, carveddouble doors. To end the one year confinement, a ceremony isheld when the boy and his teachers return in the Bayaka Masks. Masks show a wide range of design and subject matter. Thepower has been asked to protect the mother and child, and to let them have a fruitful life. One is the representation of the social events that are taking place in the"new" Africa. These masks are worn in ritual in which the wearer could empower the spirit. These doors are part of the architecture that dominated thetribe's palace surroundings. A great example ofan African mask is Bayaka Mask. Many masks are decorated with beads, wigs, humanhair, and earrings. Present day painters often use subjects such as religion, politics,symbols, and human body. Sculptures came in a variety of shapes and sizes. Among these themes, the Yoruba Palace Doors were created. This mask is used for a form of rite. Lastly, present day African Art has begun to make its mark over the last 100years.
