DBQ: New England Vs. Chesapeake reginons
Although the New England and Chesapeake regions were both settled largely by the English these two regions formed distinct societies. This could have occurred because of each regions different point of view, which they had pertaining to religion and government, and how they handled their economy. The New England colonies revolved around religion. For the New England colonies religion and government went hand in hand. For the puritans their church leader was also their government leader. John Winthrop a Congregationalist puritan delivered the city upon a hill speech to motivate his fellow puritans to be the model for others. Faith in God was one of the most important things; they should be able to convert others with there examples (doc-A). These puritans had a strong work ethic, which helped develop a good economy for New England. Along with their strong work ethic puritans also had a strong believe that all should be treated equally, the New England colonies established wage and price regulations in Connecticut, which would make both price and wage fair to all (doc-E). The set up of this regulation
Bacon stated that these people in higher position were only getting richer and richer and doing nothing for the state (doc-H). The Chesapeake colonies government did try to encourage migration to this region by establishing the headright system in which they would give land to those who choose to settle in the region. The Chesapeake region was mainly an agricultural region; this region had good soil and very good climate for farming. The first order of business was to set a minimum price for the sale of tobacco and to establish laws, but it could not prevent rebellion from occurring. Even though governor of Virginia, Berkley, had to say other wise. With these articles of agreement we can see how the colonies of New England especially Massachusetts wanted to make sure that the colony was well founded and fair to those who where rich and poor. Most slaves or just immigrants who came to the Chesapeake colonies where young, both men and women starting from the age of fourteen to the age of forty (doc-C). He stated that along side of other men, they where defending the state against the Dutch (doc-G). The New England colonies also made sure that those who where coming to settle in the colonies had professions, this would help set up a good productive communities. Although the church of England was the official church the colonies were required to pay taxes to support the church and were required to attend services even if they were not devoted to the church. We have seen how religion and government and how they ran their economy made regions distinct even though they come from the same origins. For that reason the Chesapeake region had imported slaves so that they could work on plantations. On the other hand the Chesapeake region had a different point of view on religion, religion was not the most important thing in their lives. These colonies harvested many different products such as Tobacco, which were their major product, as well as rice and indigo.
