My Antonia American Dreams

             Immigration to America in the mind of a foreigner is more than but a dream that lasts for a mere moment of rest. The dream they posses of a land of peace and opportunity doesn't end with the rising sun. Their dream is a taste for the reality they long for all day and night. This longing toward a better life is what fuels more than a dream; it's a desire for themselves and their families. An example of immigrants bearing these desires comes from the novel My Antonia by Willa Cather. Job opportunity, education, and success for future generations are all factors that fueled the American Dream.
             First, the immigrants would come from a typically poor country, and had few stable jobs to offer. Europe offered little land for their citizens to build up a success; America had the solution to this problem. In My Antonia, Mr.Shimerda takes his family to rural Nebraska so they may grow and harvest a bounty of food. Nebraska is a large state and provides plenty of land for immigrants as compared to an urban city growing with big industry. In Nebraska, the Shimerdas start off jealous of their neighbors the Burdens, who have an abundance of food. As some immigrants experience, it takes more than just coming to America to live their dream, it takes time to build up their prosperity. And for others, prosperity comes easy. A Norwegian character Lena, immigrated and started her own dress shop. "I have a dressmaking shop in the Raleigh Block, out on O Street. I've made a real good start" (209).
             Next, education in America was a part of society that the founding fathers imposed for the growing success of its citizens. For immigrants, back home gave their children a mediocre education if any at all. The majority of education for children was giving by the parents.
