A Rose For Emily

             The short stories, "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" and "A Rose For Emily", written by Katherine Anne Porter and William Faulkner respectively, paint portraits of two very different elderly women. The jilted Granny Weatherall is a strong, insistent, and perhaps stubborn survivor who strives to finish her course with dignity. In contrast, Emily is a woman who has buckled under most, if not all hardships in her life, and has gone mad. These two women are totally different.
             Granny Weatherall is a very prideful woman. She is a hard worker, a confident figure, and a self made woman neither seeking or needing outside help in her opinion. She is a pillar in her local society and in her old age; many still seek her guidance, and mere presence. For instance, Father Connolly, the local minister in the story, was known to drop in on Granny Weatherall, although it wasn't required of him. "It was like him to drop in and inquire". The local doctor, Doctor Harry visits her twice in one day. During the Doctor's entrance, as Granny suggest the doctor had been there only minutes ago, Cornelia replies, "That was this morning, Mother". In contrast Emily is a mysterious, and seemingly crazy woman. Unlike Granny Weatherall, Emily appears to be a burden, not a pillar to her community. She is rarely visited by any of her community, and when visited, the reason for visiting her tends to be town business or mere curiosity, not the seeking of her company. For example, the men of the town, after many complaints of an unpleasant scent coming from Emily's home, visit Emily unbeknownst to her, and they "broke open the cellar door and sprinkled lime" to cure the home of its horrid fragrance.
