Egypt, (Arabic, Misr), a country in the northeastern corner of Africa, linking Asia with the rest of Africa. The rugged Sinai peninsula joins Egypt with the Levant and Arabia, while the Nile River basin connects it with sub-Saharan Africa. In an essay on Egypt's destiny, President Gamal Abdel Nasser pointed out that his country is influential in three worlds. The first is that of the Arab nations; the second, the larger world of the African continent; and the third and broadest, the world of Islam. Modern Egypt has played a pivotal role in all three of these areas and the influence of ancient Egypt was also felt far beyond its borders. The lower Nile basin was one of the cradles of civilization. Modern Egyptians recall with pride the Pharaonic civilization whose monuments in "eternal stone" still project its ancient grandeur. Since the deserts on either side of the Nile basin have provided no effective barrier to foreign invasion, Egypt has been overrun by many conquerors and has belonged to many of the world's fabled empires. Transportation and Trade Although Egypt is geographically large, the habitable area is small because it is confined to the land reached by Nile irrigation waters.
