Dulce et decorum est

             Choose one of the war poems an write an essay saying how effectively the poet has written about war.
             Wilfred Owen was a great anti-war poet. Having served in world war 1, his poems illustrate the horrors of war, putting down the poets of the time who painted a picture of heroism and patriotism gained by signing up.
             Owen has inserted the irony that it is not a sweet and proper thing to die for ones country, contrary to what recruitment campaigns were saying at the time. The poet has created a scene where men ,who were once young and fit, are trudging back to base-camp now 'like old beggars'. He begins the story of how physically and mentally exhausting the horrors of war are.
             The way Wilfred Owen has described the march back to camp allows the reader to open their eyes and see the harsh reality of war.
             'Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots but limped on, blood-shod.'
             Fatigue was a great part to play in the depression of the men. Constantly tired and uncared for, the men fell victims to a brutal wilderness.
             'Till on the haunting flares we turn our backs' This is another illustration of how 'drunk with fatigue' the men are. They are so tired they do not bother to turn around to look at the flares. The men are marching along as if in a trance.
             The poems use of creative words emphasises the message the author wishes to portray. Words like "guttering", "choking", and drowning not only show how the man, who has been left out in the gas, is suffering, but that he is in extreme pain of which no human should ever endure.
             Other words like 'writhing' and 'froth-corrupted' describe precisely the ture, horrid torment the man is being put through. Words like 'flung' created a degree of emergency among the reader. The fact that the troops must treat the body of a friend and comrade really brings home the
