Hindu and Grecian Myths
Interpret two myths that exist from different civilizations and analyze their similarities. Focus on ritual-religious beliefs that seem important to the specific cultural or societal backgrounds of the two different civilizations. Do not give a synopsis of the myths.....that is too easy, and useless.Throughout history there have been numerous ancient societies that share different beliefs on the beginnings of the world. Although dissenting beliefs are present, these ancient cultures share common interests in the origin of man, creation of the earth, and explanation of natural phenomenon. Another feature of the Greek creation myth is that anything that was formed was used to complement or better the other. In creation myths the first person is usually introduced; from that person the earth and its roots are formed. In an effort to create life the Hindu Lord created the waters and put a seed in them. The Greek creation myth "the creation" originated with the first person, Chaos; from him the earth and all of its entities were formed. The Hindu myth "The Golden Egg and the primeval being" also began with the first person, the Lord. The cycle continued with the birth of different gods that corresponded to each other by complementing the other until the universe was finally complete. Everything that was created from the earth to the sky was intended complement each other, they worked together. Tired of his universe being shrouded in total darkness, indiscernible, and undiscoverable the Lord revealed himself, with the desire to create different creatures in his likeness. In examining the creation myths of the Greeks and Hindu's we discover different views as to the creation of earth as well as man. This creature sacrificed himself in order to create the universe; meaning each of his limbs and elements in his composition gave birth to separate entities that corresponded to each other and completed the world. These two creation myths are very genuine, and extremely diverse in explanations of the creation of earth and man. He was the entire universe, all that there was and what was to be. From this egg emerged the primeval being with a thousand thighs, a thousand feet, a thousand arms, a thousand eyes, a thousand faces, a thousand faces, and a thousand heads. From Chaos also came Nyx and Hemera also known as night and day.
