David is thrilled when his father, a British Navy captain, decides to take him along
on an expedition up the west coast of North America. Davie's father is a good captain,
but he works Davie hard on the ship. Davie is away from home and holy has 2 adult
friends on the ship. His friends are his father, and a hard worker named Grimsby. Davie
scrubs the deck, and he serves food to the crew of the Langly.
One day during the trip, Grimsby gets in a fight with another crew man, and his
opponent, named Walters, gets whipped by the captain for it. From that day on, Walters
holds a grudge against the Captain and Davie. As the ship sails, they anchor in a cave
where they are soon approached by natives. They were nervous of the Natives, but they
were peaceful and were bearing gifts of gold, fruit, and beautifully woven blankets.
The next day, Davie is feeling lonely. Along-side the ship he notices a baby seal
darting in and out of the water. He soon becomes friends with the seal, and it helps him
deal with his loneliness. Davie then goes in the water to swim with the seal without
permission from his father. He climbed down the ladder and had a great time with his new
animal friend. He spent the whole night swimming with the seal, and it was getting late.
He went to the side of the ship to climb up the rope ladder, but it was gone. He couldn't
tread water for too long, and he had to quick think of a plan to get back aboard the
Langly. He was now nervous, and he realized he might drown in the warm water. The
seal nudged him to the anchor, and by luck Davie found a way back onto the ship. He
climbed back aboard using the big chain of the anchor and was now safe for the moment.
What Davie didn't know is that Walters had brought up the rope ladder in hope of Davie
drowning. Davie didn't tell his father. Davie has a special connection with the seal now,
and he can&ap...
