Pearl,

One of the most complex and elaborate characters in The Scarlet Letter is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. Pearl, throughout the story, has many physical, emotional, and psychological characteristics. Her motivation, reactions to others and their reactions to her, and actions contribute to the plot of the novel. Hawthorne uses vivid descriptions to characterize Pearl. Physically, Pearl has a "beauty that became every day more brilliant."(81) Pearl is ravishing, with "beauty that shone with deep and vivid tints' a bright complexion, eyes possessing intensity both of depth and glow, and hair already of a deep, glossy brown, and which, in after years, w

Hawthorne uses Pearl as an effective and dynamic character; she is a constant reminder to Hester of her sin!. However, the characters with a closer, more in depth relationship to her, feel differently. " Combining with her extreme beauty, are the lavish dresses that she wears. Pearl continuously demands public recognition. The elaborate dresses and her beauty cause her to be viewed as even stranger from the other typical Puritan children, who are dressed in traditional clothing. Pearl refuses to recognize and acknowledge her until she returns to the shameful mother that she has always known. She wants to know what Hester will not tell her. The children did not accept Pearl!; her unavoidable seclusion is due to her mother's sin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. On the rare occasion that the children show interest in Pearl, she throws rocks at them. However, this is impossible because he is unable to acknowledge Pearl in public. Because of Pearl's banishment from Puritan society she was thrown to another way of life and her wilderness and peculiarity is a direct product of her banishment. Pearl is drawn to the "A" on Hester's bosom almost immediately. Because of Pearl's nonexistent history she naturally becomes a very curious child.
