The Crucible

In almost every literary work, there is a tragic hero. A tragic hero is known for a flaw which they cannot recognize that eventually leads them to something bad, most of the time, death. In Arthur Miller's production of The Crucible, John Procter is the typical hero for a play. He has many attributes which are manifested in his character which characterizes him as the hero.
The hero of a story must struggle for something valuable or important. In Procter's case, he struggles for his name, as well as his wife's life. When asked to sign his name to the confession for the whole town to see, he refuses to sign "because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! ... How may I live without my name?
I have given you my soul; leave me my name." John is worried about his name being blackened in the town and his reputation spreading to his three sons. He fights with the judges to have his name removed from the confession sheet and not nailed upon the church doors because that would ruin his name. He also fights for his wife's life and exposes himself as an adulterer to prove to the courts that his wife's accuser, Abigail Williams, just wanted Elizabeth Procter dead so she could marry John Procter.
A loyal band of followers or companions often accompanies the hero. Francis Nurse, Giles Corey, Rebecca Nurse, and many more people in the town of Salem knew the truth and were behind Procter in proving the girls wrong. Giles and Francis had depositions written to prove people innocent and several witnesses to prove the girls as frauds. Rebecca Nurse was with Procter in the end as well trying to help him remain faithful in God and telling him "Let you fear nothing! Another judgment waits us all!" The people that were with Procter until the end never gave up; they never confessed to witchery, they either died along with Procter, or beforehand.
