The Crucible
In almost every literary work, there is a tragic hero. A tragic hero is known for a flaw which they cannot recognize that eventually leads them to something bad, most of the time, death. In Arthur Miller's production of The Crucible, John Procter is the typical hero for a play. He has many attributes which are manifested in his character which characterizes him as the hero. The hero of a story must struggle for something valuable or important. In Procter's case, he struggles for his name, as well as his wife's life. When asked to sign his name to the confession for the whole town to see, he refuses to sign "because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! ... How may I live without my name?I have given you my soul; leave me my name." John is worried about his name being blackened in the town and his reputation spreading to his three sons. He fights with the judges to have his name removed from the confession sheet and not nailed upon the church doors because that would ruin his name. He also fights for his wife's life and exposes himself as an a
A hero struggles, has loyal followers, suffers, is tested, and is prepared to die. Rebecca Nurse was with Procter in the end as well trying to help him remain faithful in God and telling him "Let you fear nothing! Another judgment waits us all!" The people that were with Procter until the end never gave up; they never confessed to witchery, they either died along with Procter, or beforehand. Procter had an affair which he could not erase. He was labeled the tragic hero of the play and for a good reason too. His lusting lost him his wife, as well as his own life. Arthur Miller weaves these characteristics in and out of John Procter through out the entire play. John was prepared to die for what he believed in. The affair he had with Abigail Williams was a wound which could not be healed; the magistrate in his heart could only judge him and the deciding verdict was guilty. From his affair with Abby to the accusation of his wife being a witch to his own accusation along with death, Procter suffers quite a bit. His lust destroyed the village of Salem, Massachusetts. Giles and Francis had depositions written to prove people innocent and several witnesses to prove the girls as frauds. He had made mistakes in his life but what mad hasn't? He knew he was innocent and believed without a doubt his wife was innocent along with other members of the community; because he believed in God and knew for a fact he was not a witch, he was hanged for not confessing. When he turned against his wife and went towards Abby, his loyalty was lost and the suffering began. Francis Nurse, Giles Corey, Rebecca Nurse, and many more people in the town of Salem knew the truth and were behind Procter in proving the girls wrong.
