Deconstruction of of text - 'my immortal'
'My Immortal' by Evanescence is the text I have chosen. It portrays an alternative view of relationships in both youth and middle-aged people. They can either accept the reality, that life goes on and we might stumble into the wrong people, or go against it and say there is always a happy ending when you fall in love with someone. This is a music clip downloaded from the internet 2004 and has both visual and audio contexts. It is aimed at groups who are trying to forget their problems, trying to get over their scars form which they have been hurt by in a relationship. The text can also be aiming at couples and warning them the consequences of this pain if they break up from a relationship. The audience view the text as when people break up with their partners they will be hurt and it's hard to through some of these times. Others might also see this music clip as a warning to people that take relationships seriously and when people contribute so much to a relationship they might gain nothing but memories and pain in the end. This is exactly what the text is trying to put into perspective. If the audience saw this text as young people falling in love with each other, then most people would see it as most teenagers are like thi
The differences between these dominant views of text to youth make meaning to the point that there can be either a good or a bad position that people can be put in at the end. Also not seen in the text are the more older group of people, this is probably because there is no relevance for them in the text; implying that it's too late for them to feel these emotions again, while they've probably been with this problem in the past when they use to be young and have had many 'lovers'. Only more mature people would understand the ideology of this text, as the normal social youth group would probably know nothing about this knowledge. The foreground people in this text are the young people who break-up in relationships and are hurt in that effect while people who are marginalized are people that have not been involved in this text or that don't want to have experiences like this; as in not having a relationship at all. As she was looking around, it's as though she feels the presence of someone close by (former partner). The shades of black to me represent the negative and positive parts of the text more easily, there is no camouflage in-between the colours; showing that there is only two ways of the text to understand. The woman is watching the kids as she walks around the fountain, but still can't seem to move on with her life and just lives with this complication of breaking up. The lyrics shows forms of complication within the discourse, as the woman says 'you used to captivate me, by your resonated light' meaning you use to enchant me, pursue me with your charms and made me understand life more and perhaps had more to live for. The text is in black and white (no colour) showing that the discourses of the colour could represent sadness and dull thoughts in the mind, while could also be pointing out depression and loss. This type of language would most probably be used in situations that are expressive and full of depression as in losing someone you loved deeply, as this text has shown. There is no real harm done if anyone breaks up in the relationship, because it was just a fun experience for them. People can stay together and be happy with their lives, or they can leave a loved one, hurt their feelings, while the person that caused this might have traces of guilt or regretfulness of the decision they have made and would most probably hurt their own feelings. For example the rock band appears near the end of the song, which represents what the woman's thoughts were in her head, showing the more aggressive view on the situation she has been involved in, when her partner left her and she can't find any answers to her problems. The music in this text puts the mood toward the images and gives it more understanding.
