water

Water is the most familiar and abundant liquid on earth. In solid liquid form it coversabout 70% of the earth's surface. The unique properties of water make life possible onEarth. Water characteristics, such as adhesion and cohesion, surface tension, and highheat capacity affects the organism of the Earth. The hydrogen bonds between water molecules results in two important properties :adhesion-an attraction between dissimilar substances and cohesion - and the attractionbetween similar substances. Acting together, adhesion and cohesion are responsible forcapillary action, which allows water to move through the roots of plants and through thetiny blood vessels in our body. Plants and trees couldn't survive without capillary action.

When perspiration evaporates on theskin, it cools it, and lowers its temperature. The vaporization of water isretarded by hydrogen bonds. Water's high resistance tovaporization is significant to animals, such as ourselves who rely on the evaporation ofwater from our body surface as a cooling device. Water must absorb a considerable amount of heat before themolecules break and the molecules escape as a gas. As the temperature of water approaches 0 degrees Celsius, the molecular latticeopens up and the molecules become widely separated, reaching their lowest density as icecrystals form. This quality allows for the survival of aquatic animals. Cohesion and adhesion are responsible forcapillary action, which allows water to move through the roots of plants and through thetiny blood vessels in our body. Water, which contains dissolved nutrients, gets inside the roots and startsclimbing the plant tissue through cohesion. This explains why ice forms on the surface of the lake, rather than thebottom allowing aquatic animals to survive. In conclusion, water is an essential compound that has several unique propertieswhich allows for the survival of organisms. Also, capillaries are the tiny blood vessels inour body. In addition, pure water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius but is most dense at 4 degreesCelsius. As it cools, its molecules at first movetogether, increasing in their density and reaching their greatest low-temperature density at4 degrees Celsius. The high specific heat of water makes ocean temperature stable forlife. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**.
