The Cure For Substance Abuse
The major drug epidemic that America is facing today is going to be no easy problem to fix, if it is even possible to fix it at all. The reason that the drug problem will more than likely never be stopped is because those who are in charge of the war on drugs are not only taking the wrong approaches to eliminating drug use, but their goal of total eradication has defeated them before they've begun. Our countries politicians and media have turned the usage of illegal drugs into a political platform and an attention grabber to help further their careers, and in the process have made the use of illegal substances, marijuana especially, seem to be more hazardous a problem than it really is. Figuring that Alcohol and Tobacco, which are legal drugs, kill more people per year than all illegal drugs combined, the media should be focusing their attention to these problems. But unfortunately these substances make the government too much money every year for them to ever try to pass la!ws banning them. I am not saying that all illegal drugs should be legalized, because that would just be sending out a message to America's youth that using drugs is ok, since the government would never legalize anything that
People need to watch ordinary Joes like themselves overdosing on heroin and dying or becoming brain-dead to make them realize that yes, it can happen to you. With the technology that is available to us today we should be able to locate the parts of the brain that are affected by drugs that cause addiction and also the genes that are the cause of biological addiction. Drugs should definitely not be legalized, and since it is not possible to criminalize drugs that are already legal (ex prohibition), some in between has to be found, because drugs have become too ingrained into our society to ever be completely eliminated. There are many different things that can be done in this country to eradicate the use of legal and illegal drugs, because people decide to use drugs for many different reasons. Since this is an utter impossibility (unless of course we could figure out a way to unmotivate the rich and famous), something else is going to have to be done. The only option left available to us then is to figure out a way to make people not want to use drugs. The first, and probably the most unrealistic tactic, is to attempt to make drugs uncool. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. If our country took all of the money they spend in one year on the DARE program and applied it to mental health, rehabilitative, and child welfare services I guarantee ther!e would be a major decrease in the usage rates that we see in this country. If every time people turn on the news or log onto the internet they see another case of death or brain damage caused by single or repeated drug use, they are going to be more cautious if ever! in the situation to use these types of drugs. As long as our kids favorite rappers and movie stars use drugs, the kids are going to continue to try them. There is also the possibility of manipulation of the neurotransmitters that cause the "high" from drugs, so that a euphoric state will not result with the use of certain substances. If there is no motivation to use, then there is no longer a problem. Also, if scientists are able to come up with something like Antabuse, which makes its user violently ill when they drink alcohol, they should be able to devise some sort of implant that can be injected at birth into an infant, which would make this person "allergic" to certain drugs for the rest of his/her life. Also, since the American people will be making the decision not to use for themselves !it has a greater chance of long-term success, rather than if the government tried to tell them what to do.
