Ethan Frome

The novel Ethan Frome involves three main characters, Ethan Frome, Zeena Frome, and Mattie silver. These characters are at the center of this story. Each of these characters possesses very distinct traits, personalities, and attitudes. In the case of Mattie Silver an attitude that greatly contrast her situation.Ethan Frome was a proud man, also a man of integrity. Although he was very poor he would not appear apathetic. He did not want the people of Starkfield to pity him. For this reason he would not socialize with the folks in town. Ethan did not want to discuss his economic troubles or the situation at the farm. He chose instead to carry his burden alone. Throughout the story his integrity shows. One example of this is the time when he arranged to meet the narrator to ride her to the train station. There was a bad storm that day and the narrator questioned whether Ethan would show up. Not only did he show up he rode her all the way to work knowing the trains would be delayed due to the storm and cause her to be late for work. Ethan was a sad person. His marriage o

She remained a pleasant, and gay at least until the smash-up. Although there lives were engulfed by gloom it seems each found a way of dealing with it. Silver is the fact that regardless of her financial status, her living situation, and all her family troubles she didn't become resentful, or bitter. She would purchase expensive treatments, medicinal and otherwise to cure her "ails". In particular Denis Eady, who came from a prominent, wealthy family. Zeena was unhappy with her marriage to Ethan, and her life. Mattie is a spirited person, an attractive young woman, and a bit on the reckless side. They had problems after their first year, and he realized he marri!ed for the wrong reasons. Ethan somberly accepted the life he couldn't escape, Zeena, I feel, used her ailsą as a way to cope with her unhappiness, and Mattie, well I guess she just didn't know what it was like to so unhappy yet and was able to enjoy happiness where she found it. Zeena had a talent for finding ills within her. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Her attractiveness is shown not only by Ethan's obvious attraction to her but also by the attention she received from the eligible men around town. Not only did she complain about her ailments, she found reasons to complain about others. For example in the beginning of the story she attended a social event at which she laughed, danced, and enjoyed her self. Zeena would carry-on about Mattie's cooking, cleaning, the care that she received from her, and even the expense for keeping her in her home.
