Malicious Mother Syndrome
Malicious Mother Syndrome has been recognized as a national problem. This syndrome effects as many as six million children nationally. Cases of Malicious Mother Syndrome involve visitation interference accompanied by vicious behavior, such as violence and violations of the law that are acted out against the father. (Arditti 1992) reports that approximately 50% of divorced fathers report that their ex-wife has directly interfered with visitation with their children. Approximately 40% of custodial mothers admit denying visitation their ex-husband visitation in order to punish them. Malicious Mother Syndrome has shown that cases of chronic visitation interference go way beyond attempts at alienating a child from the father. (Turkat in press) has reported the disorder fits into these five categories: (1) excessive litigation (2) denying regular visitation (3) denying participation in extra curricular activities (4) malicious lying to others (5) violating the law to attack the father. Excessive litigation takes place during the divorce. The mother acts out against the father trying to discredit him or to delay the court proceedings. An unpleasant turn of events happened when a woman was able to man
Unfortunately, even when the father has a legal right to visitation, the mother will continue to interfere. Even when such cases are brought to trial, the courts are often inadequate in supporting fathers' visitation rights. The child was immediately taken away from him and his access to her was denied. In an almost comical case n angry divorcing mother called a Christian evangelical television station and pledged $1,000, giving the name, address and phone number of her divorcing Jewish husband as the pledge (Shepard, 1992). Attempts to extend court proceedings are often Zotti, 2successful for these women, forcing the father to take time off work and extending the time of visitation between father and child. For example, judges will demonstrate significant patience and "bend over backwards" to allow each side to present their case. Malicious lying to the children is often reported during disputed divorce situations. The mother will then say things like, "I wonder why your father didn't want to come to see you today" (Snyder,1996)? The mother may also refused to provide the father with any information about any extra-curricular activities. Malicious Mother Syndrome has shown that cases of chronic visitation interference go way beyond attempts at alienating a child from the father. Participation in extra-curricular activities is sometimes an essential part of the father child bond. Fathers are deliberately given the wrong date and time for an important event. One woman probably not to happy with her ex deliberately drove her automobile into the house his house, the same house where their mutual children resided. A mother that knew the father was away on vacation, told the children to leave several messages on his answering machine asking for him to call back right away if he wanted some additional visitation (Hodges, 1991). (Turkat in press) has reported the disorder fits into these five categories: (1) excessive litigation (2) denying regular visitation (3) denying participation in extra curricular activities (4) malicious lying to others (5) violating the law to attack the father. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**.
