Report on Music Recitals

A senior, Gwendolyn Lee Keith, at the University of Kentucky Singletary Center performed her recital. Her voice was that of the highest female voice the soprano. Gwendolyn performed many pieces, which my program did not have. The first piece had the accompaniment of a string instrument (piano) and a woodwind instrument (flute). This piece as well as many of the other pieces exhibited the use of crescendos and decrescendos. The remainder of the pieces contained the same texture, which was homophony. The next five pieces demonstrated many intervals, which enhanced the understanding of the pieces. The next three pieces have a more allegro tempo. The dynamics are more of a mezzo forte level, which makes the song sound happier and more energetic. The happier sounding pieces are usually played in a major key. Than we see an example of a song that has the dynamics of piano to make it seem sad and depressing. This was sung in English, while all the previous were in presuma!bly French. Because this piece sound sad it probably in a minor key. There are two pieces that I choose to focus on they are both famous pieces composed by Franz Schubert, "Gretchen am Spinnrade" ("Gretchen at the spinning Wheel

Mein armer Kopf My poor head Ist mir verruckt, is in a whirl;Mein armer Sinn my poor thoughtsIst mir zerstuckt. Verzeichnis des Schrifttums uber Franz Schubert. There is much variation in the dynamics of this piece. Another reason I picked "Gretchen am Spinnrade" is because I had heard it before and was more familiar with this piece than the others. The last five or so years he composed more of sad or angry music. Schubert establishes German lied as a new form of music. Then the piece continues to shift from piano to mezzo forte quite often. The piano gives the listener the feeling of "Gretchen's spinning wheel as she sings" (Yudkin).
