Uniforms in Public High Schools
Will I catch my crush's eye wearing this skirt? Will someone else be wearing the exact same thing? Will my friends like this outfit? These are just some of the questions public high school students ask themselves before selecting their daily ensemble. Choosing an outfit for school has become a time consuming process for high school students. In addition to being an educational institution, high schools have also become a fashion show. Teenagers parade around the halls in the newest fashions, just to be noticed by their peers. Students are judged by what they are wearing on a daily basis by their peers and teachers. In his essay, "Three for the Stripes," Michael Fitzpatrick recalls a time when his fellow classmates made fun of him because he didn't wear name-brand shoes. Most teenagers say the way they dress is a form of individuality. It seems to me, depending on what clique they are in, that they all dress the same. Therefore, I believe uniforms in public high sch!ools would alleviate a lot of the stress and pressures students experience on a daily basis. First, I believe the implementation of uniforms in public high schools would eliminate the emphasis put on fashion, and increas
"Look at those legs!" "I bet she's wearing a !thong!" A group of girls criticizes her for her dangerous fashion endeavor. Students rush out to get the latest fashions at the best prices. Finally, I think the amount of ever-present cliques would be greatly reduced, and have less to do with fashion and more to do with academics, clubs, and sports. If this was so important, there wouldn't be groups of people that all dress the same. In most cases, the preps wear sweaters and khakis, the gangsters wear baggy clothes, the jocks advertise their favorite team on their shirts, and the skaters wear a crazy combination of clothes. These aren't individuals, but rather they are cliques. First impressions play a major role in our everyday interactions at school. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. If we were to compare a nicely dressed student and a poorly dressed student, the nicely dressed student would be respected more than the poorly dressed student regardless of how well they are doing in school. " Risky and outrageous outfits can distract an adolescent mind for the entire day. Finally, I believe the use of uniforms would reduce the number of cliques in high schools. For example, if a fire alarm was pulled,! the administration would always go after the poorly dressed students because they looked more capable of causing problems than the nicely dressed students. For example, Jane comes to school wearing a short leopard-print skirt, and a group of guys makes her the topic of conversation. They don't do this to make themselves feel better, but rather to be accepted by their peers. If everyone wore the same uniform, there wouldn't be as many groups trying to outdo the other based on fashion.
