The ancien regime "means old regime in French" and is the term applied to practically every facetof European social, economic, and political development before the French Revolution of 1789. A striking feature of the ancien regime was the contrast in the lives and experiences of the peoplesof different rank. It was based on tradition and hierarchical. The Industrial Revolution did not aid the peasant but did profit the other classes. The peasants were upset with the landlords changing the ways of production to increase profits. The family waseconomically and emotionally vulnerable. Discontent caused unrest andriots. Society ruled by the privileged and based on group rights rather than individualrights. Belowthem was a growing middle class or bourgeoisie who were becoming resentful of the aristocraticmonopoly on money. A class system regulated the economy. Theeconomic and social factors resulting from this way of life brought on the French Revolution in atthe end of the 18th century. The peasants called for a restoration of traditional and customary rights because it provided themwith access to the courts and grievance procedures. The largest and poorest group in the cities were the working poorconsisting of shopkeepers, artisans, and wage earners organized in guilds.
