The Scarlet Letter
The story the Scarlet letter is all about symbolism. People and objects are symbolic of events and thoughts. Throughout the course of the book, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses Hester, Pearl, and Arthur Dimmesdale to signify the Puritan and romantic philosophies. The movie The Scarlet Letter, directed by Roland Joffe, is depicted suprisingly different, than Hawthorne's 1850 novel. Take for instance, the letter "A," surely a big part in the novel. In the novel, the letter is very nice, decorated, and in gold. In the book, Hester makes the letter herself. In the movie it is given to her. Hester is given the letter while on the sca
Roger Chillingworth, also believed to be the father at a certain time, dies at the end of each, and leaves money to Pearl in the book. There is little emphasis on witchcraft in the novel, along with the Indians. Dimmesdale, Hester and Pearl met in a special place, the forest. They freed him because they believed him to be a ghost. The child in the story, Pearl, does not go to be older than four or five in the movie, but we see her at about seven in the novel. The Scarlet Letter is a dramatic literary device in which each object, character or event symbolically illustrates a moral or religious principal. In the movie though, he has a strong connection with the Indians, they captured him. In the book, he self inflicts pain upon himself and eventually dies from the guilt he feels. To Hawthorne, however, the forest was beautiful and natural. In the movie Pearl is thought to be a witch, along with Hester and Ms. Arthur Dimmesdale, a well-respected minister, is the father of Pearl. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**The Scarlet Letter. All of them are ranging from Puritan to Romantic ideas. In the movie, the letter isn't given that much attention, in which I think, is strange. Yes, we do realize this in the movie, but, Dimmesdale is not at shame as much or feels as guilty.
