So when it rained, the water ran off the fields and less evaporated into the air. The drier air reduced rainfall and cloud cover so the region grew hotter and hotter. This in turn led to less production in the fields. The insects and bacteria also had a negative affect on the produce! So pesticides were utilized. Then, the insects started attacking the people which in turn began contracting malaria. The number of cases jumped from 20,000 to 90,000 between the years of l987 to 1993.
