Religion in Ancient Greece
The ancient Greeks were a deeply religious people. For them, religion was important because they believed that it would make their lives better while they were living. They also worshipped many gods whom they believed appeared in human form and yet were gifted with superhuman strength and timeless beauty.
It is amazing how this ancient civilization strikes us with its mysteries, as we go in search of history. Temples were large and beautiful buildings where Greeks went to pray or sacrifice animals. The ancient Greeks were polytheistic because they believed in many different gods and goddesses. They believed the gods answered their questions using signs in nature. Greeks built temples in every town for one god or goddess. Greeks believed that Zeus was the ruler of the universe and that he showed his existence though lightning, thunder, and earthquakes. Consequently, we can see how gods and goddesses played an important role in Greek religion.
