Langston Hughes

To understand Langston Hughes you must first know some of his genealogy. HisGrandfather, Charles Langston Hughes had taken part in political activism on behalf of aslave. Plus Charles' brother, John Langston, was a member of the United States House ofRepresentatives ( from Virginia) in the 1890's as well as being a diplomat, a lawyer, andan educator. This then got him the attention of otherwell-known poets In 1926 he enrolled at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and graduated from theirin 1929, the same year he finished his first novel. After his brief stay at Columbia he served on a ship to Africa and then lived andworked in Paris for a while before moving back to the United States. When Mary died, Langston was thirteen, and moved to Illinois to join his motherand new husband. Between the years of 1936-1939 Hughes served as the Madrid correspondent for aBaltimore, Maryland newspaper during the Spanish Civil war. Simple then became well-known and Hughes went on to use the character in quit afew of his short stories. In between voyages he would tour the South and read his poems and works atassorted churches and schools. He then went off to Columbia University andstudied their from 1921-1922. She was so impressed that she helped push him into the public eye by publishing hispoems in some well-known news papers. At the age of 67 Hughes died in a New York Hospital on May 22, 1967. Then in the 1940's Hughes wrote for the Chicago Defender and later for the NewYork Post, where he wrote a newspaper column with a character called Simple. Hughes then got his big break into the public eye ine 1925 while working as a busboy in a Washington D. That is what made him stand out apart from the rest of thepoets of his time, and perhaps that is what made him respected by millions also.
