The Causes and Effects of Inter-racial Relationships
In this paper I will be discussing the cause and effects of inter-racial relationships. I will discuss inter-racial dating and the effects that this has on all of the races involved. I will also discuss inter-racial marriage and the uphill battle to keep the marriage strong. Lastly, I will be discussing the effects of inter-racial relationships on children born into them. The information obtained for this paper will largely come from my own experiences and my own family life, with supporting statistics from multiple texts. The background information for this paper was obtained through real life experiences. I am twenty-eight years old and I am still unclear as to what my race is. My mother is white, French to be exact. My father, on the other hand, is not. Race, to him, is not a big deal. I do know that he is Portuguese, and on occasion he will refer to himself as Spanish. I was raised white, in an all white town, and never knew why I was stared at. When my father's parents came to the United States they changed their last name, so they could fit in to the white population. If they were white it was easier to find a job, and easier to live. That was, for the most part, the end of the culture in my father's life. I must point o
Another factor to look at is that people generally will date/marry at an equal educational level to their own. I do not like to be classified as a particular race. I never did go back, at age fifteen I had a baby. It is hurtful to say that the largest form of discrimination I received, as an inter-racial child, was from my own extended family. Although, it was not only society that had an issue with this. Race will be an issue throughout your entire marriage, less prominent at times, but always there still. This gap can be applied to any same-race relationship that has a difference in social class, religion, or culture. It wasn't until later in my life that I heard the name bi-racial used to describe me, I didn't care for it then and I don't care for it now. My grandparents had passed away (on my fathers side), I had nowhere to live. Yes, there are times when we feel additional stresses from our families and friends, but they understand that we are married and that there is nothing that they can say or do to change that. I only wish for them to find reciprocal love from whom they choose.
