The piece of paper
The purposes that students attend a University are infinite. One purpose of higher education is to keep students in line. College prepares students for the long road ahead of them and allows them to pursue the career they desire. Yet another purpose of secondary education is to get students ready to fit in to society. Students also go on to college to attain a "piece of paper" which proves to others that they can complete a given task, and that they can be institutionalized. First, I'd like to express the way that I feel education keeps all students in line. The way that education is given now, I can see that everyone is taught the same way, and the same material is used. The students are taught to think about what the teacher has to say and not for themselves. I believe as Paulo Freire, that students are treated like receptacles of information into which teachers and professors throw information that they have gathered and are expected to regurgitate the information when called upon to do so (Freire 54).. This method of education turns students into machines of learning that are not able to think for themselves. Throu
For instance, I have a fear of not being able to support a family later in life, as many people do. These reasons can, and will, be disputed between people forever. There are many reasons for higher education to exist. It is the evidence of their hard work, sacrifice, and their ability to be institutionalized. This piece of paper, such as a bachelor's or master's degree, states that a student has gone through the necessary steps to obtain it. After students go through the whole education process, they are "spit out" the other end of college and are ready for society to mold them into what is necessitated at that time. I recognize that I don't push myself to learn as much as I should, because I w!asn't taught how to expand my mind in the education system which I was placed. I believe that if I'm not acknowledged for the abilities that I have, someone else with perhaps less credentials as I, will be able to obtain a position that I was more qualified for. Education, no matter how viewed, has become a necessity to many people in this day and age. Through my current position as a Barista, I feel that I have become a part of the community. For example, I know the customers that show up every morning on a first name basis. So I am left with an inferior profession that also pays less. By putting myself through college and "claiming an education", as Adrienne Rich says, I am conveying to future employers that I can get a job done, and conform to what he/she has to offer me(Rich 173). This kind of relationship helps me to believe that I make a difference in their lives every day. Therefore, I know what is going on in their lives and they know what's going on in mine.
