Colin Powell -- AMERICAN LEADER
A Leader Whom I Admire: General Colin PowellThere are many character and leadership traits I admire in Colin Powell, beginning with his childhood. Colin Powell's parents are Jamican immigrants; he was born in New York City on April 5, 1937, and raised in the South Bronx. His education began in New York City public schools, and at City College of New York. While attending City College he participated in ROTC and received a commission as an Army Second Lieutenant upon graduation. Continuing to further his education he subsequently received a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University. General Powell's has developed a philosophy for being a leader; I have selected and redefined some to use as guidelines in my position as a manager. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." I can relate to this in my role as a manager and know that I can not please everyone who works for me. I know that I can not get everyone to like me in my group and try to make decisions that are focused on "the big picture". My goal is to maintain this focus and make decisions that benefit productivity without completely sacrificing morale. "The day soldiers stop bringing you thei
That I have been able to provide a goal and lead to the achievement of this common goal we share. When everyone's mind is dulled or distracted the leader must be doubly vigilant. Colin Powell never let his humble beginnings deter him from achieving greatness as a leader in the military and public sector as well. At this point I have attained (2) Certificates of Completion in Aviation Maintenance (Airframe and Powerplant), finalizing with an Associate of Science degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology - General Studies. Many times we will become engrossed in our present problems that this focus may be lost. I try to learn from the experts in my own organization as well as from our support agencies. While I may not achieve the greatness in leadership in comparison to General Colin Powell I find that his philosophy is a benefit to me in my role as a leader. I make these decisions with what is in my judgement prudence not recklessness. Elites can become so inbred that they produce hemophiliacs who bleed to death as soon as they are nicked by the real world. "Keep looking below surface appearances. It is my goal to project a desire to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities. Take leave when you've earned it: Spend time with your families. I try to use his example in my effort to continue my education after dropping from high school and joining the Navy in 1973.
