MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ESSAY
Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man in our country's history. He fought to get equal rights for the black community. King used a non-violent way of fighting. He conducted many sit-ins, and had many rallies at which he spoke. King is mostly remembered for one speech he gave entitled, "I HAVE A DREAM". He delivered this speech on August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of about 250, 000 people, after meeting with President John F. Kennedy. King begins this speech by saying, "Five score years ago..." which is the way that Abraham Lincoln opened his "Gettysburg Address". He does this because he his standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial delivering this speech. "In whose symbolic shadow we stand today" King says. He thinks back as to when Lincoln
King repeats the words, "Now is the time" many times in close proximity of each other, stressing the urgency of what he is telling them. "In paragraph 10 King tells the people to go back to many different states that are hit the hardest during this awful time of segregation. He wants them to stand up and help him fight for the equal opportunity to do anything that a white person can do. He tells them this so that they do not surrender to the white people that are trying to push them further from getting equal rights. We are free at last!" Martin Luther King Jr. By saying this he puts the image of the slaves in chains having to do things against their will. He does not want them to sit back and not do anything about it.
