Lady with a pet dog
Written in 1899, A Lady with a Pet Dog is one of Chekhov's longest short stories. This story is a great indication of the social responsibility that marriage held in turn in century Russia. This story could be a true tale taken from a real life, because many people in Russia at that time could get into the situation like the one described in the story. The story A Lady with a Pet Dog brings to life the loveless marriages that many couples found themselves in due to the morals of society; it has a deep emotional meaning; and it also teaches the reader to fight for the happiness in spite of unwritten laws of society. In XVII century, in Russia, marriages were usually arranged by patents and set up as a sort of business deal. If not, there were marriages because it was considered to be a proper and correct thing to do. Social standing was based onthe ownership of a business or a high position in a firm. The amount of money one had placed him or her in society. A marriage to a right man or woman could not only place one in a higher social position but provide a better future for children as well. I was almost shocked, as well as relieved, that after all the diligent attempts to stay with their significant others that Anne Sergeevna and Gurov decided to do the things their way and finally live their lives by what they felt but not what they were taught. Each society has its own morals and laws, and it is not easy for one individual to overcome them. I found myself wandering through the streets with Anne and Gurov, as well as searching and hoping to find a new way to live their lives. To feel only pity to these two lovers who knew that what they were doing was wrong, is impossible. Two married people found themselves on the seaside without their significant others and fail in love with feelings that didn't have to be learnt. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Individuals, who didn't want to accept the main principles and morals of the society they lived in, were risking to be outcast by this society. Ending their respective marriages and possibly disgracing themselves and their families, Anne Sergeevna and Gurov took as a chance to live their lives happy. Men and women ultimately told themselves that they loved their significant other when realistically they had learned love for these people. This is the situation that Anne Sergeevna and Gurov find themselves in. These statements are not !to say that the same situations do not arise during any other time in any other society. And this was a significant problem forAnne Sergeevna and the man that she loved. ekhov showed the unfortunate problems with a system of this type. The story A Lady with a Pet Dog is a beautiful love from beginning to end about two people who do found their "soul mate", but couldn't be happy because of the pressure of the laws and morals of the society that they lived in.
