The government spends about 10 percent of its budget on public education, and much of this money is used for the education of rural people. A popular dessert is baklava, made of thin layers of pastry, honey, and chopped nuts. Turkey's new republican government introduced sweeping cultural and political reforms that discouraged or outlawed many traditional Islamic practices.
