the plague

Father Paneloux gives two sermons throughout the novel The Plague. Many people lose their faith due to their struggles with the terrible plague. Paneloux speaks about the plague and why it is happening. Father Paneloux's faith is tested just like the citizens of Oran throughout the novel. In Paneloux's first sermon He feels that the plague was sent from God because the people in Oran had not repented for their sins. "Calamity has come on you, my brethren, and, you my brethren, you deserved it" (94). Father Paneloux is saying this because he feels that the plague has come as a result of the people's sins. He feels tha

He believes that there is a reason for everything that happens whether it be good or bad. And who among you, I ask, would dare to deny everything"(224). He believed in God and that God would get them through the plague if the people believed and accepted the plague. Since the plague was sent from God everyone should stay because it is God's will and should be the people's will. "Since it was God's will, we, too, should will it"(225). In Father Paneloux's second sermon he says, "My brothers, a time of testing has come for us all we must believe everything or deny everything. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. He not only fought for God but he fought for the people of Oran. Father Paneloux believes that the people of Oran are being punished because they didn't spend enough time with God at church. He believes that the plague, which is killing many also, is trying to lead the people towards the right path. His faith only grew stronger and stronger as the plague progressed. And who would dare to choose to hate Him?"(228) He beli!eves that everyone that loves God should stay and fight the plague together. Through all that he has been through Paneloux has not lost his faith.
