Rural Sociology
There are many circumstances and state of affairs children are facing in today’s world. These situations are not only viewed on television, read about in magazines, or heard of on the news; they can be found here in Missouri, no matter the county or location. Some examples include violent deaths at a young age, children living in poverty, high school dropouts, and children growing up in single parent households. Not only are these conditions very serious, the numbers and percentages continue to fluctuate. By examining the statistics and figures on my primary county, Cole, and my secondary county, Boone, I came to the realization that these problems are closer to home than I originally thought. After comparing the information of both counties to the entire state of Missouri, it is evident that Mid-Missouri has a fair share of adolescent problems. After living in Cole County for over 11 years, I found the statistics representing my hometown to be surprising. I assumed since my adolescence was innocent and praiseworthy, all children’s adolescence experience was similar to mine. Needless to say, I was wrong. Cole County seemed to have a high rate of violent deaths among teenagers between the ages of 15-19 years old. This is . . .
Another major circumstance found among Boone County is the overwhelming percent of children living in single parent families. Many of the children who attend these large public schools do not receive the individual attention many kids need during today’s trying times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ **Bibliography** there is none . ironic when comparing Cole County to Boone County because I figured since Boone County is larger and has a higher population of children, it would have a higher rate of violent deaths. I believe that if the children had the encouragement and support found within private schools, there would not be such high rates of dropouts or emotionally distressed disorders. This figure is higher than the state is average of 19. With all the social problems and situations facing children and teenagers of Boone County, it is surprising to see the statistics are slowly improving. After reviewing all the statistics and figures for Cole County and Boone County, I believe one of the major reasons Boone County has predominantly more circumstances and social problems is the lack of a private/parochial high school. Many of these single parent households may contribute to the number of children living in poverty. It is during high school that children need personal relationships to help shape their values and morals. It takes community action to help our adolescence through such trying times in order to mold well-rounded children for the future. Although there are many problems and is! sues associated with Cole County, more social situations are localized in Boone County. If there are many kids living on the streets without available treatment to viruses, diseases, and common colds, it is inevitable the children have to receive Medicaid to keep them healthy. It is possible the high number of single parent families and emotionally distressed children leads to a high percentage of high school dropouts per year.
