Citizen Kane Film Review

The classic 1941 film by Orson Wells, Citizen Kane, contained an unforgettable object, "Rosebud," which was referred to throughout the film. "Rosebud", was the last dying word of Charles Foster Kane, a rich and powerful newspaper mogul. While he lay on his deathbed in his mansion, he gazed at a snow globe and uttered the word "Rosebud." Rosebud was a sled that Kane had when he was a child. After his death a reporter is sent out to discover the meaning of Kane's last word, which is believed to reveal the secrets to Kane's mysterious and complicated life. The reporter's assignment is to get in touch with all of Kane's friends and associates in order to find out the meaning behind the word "Rosebud."

The film becomes centered on finding the meaning of "Rosebud." It becomes the only clue into a lonely old mans l

. . .
It was revealed to the audience when the camera shows the workman throwing the sled into the furnace with the other junk. He also said he didn't think that it would have explained anything anyway because he didn't believe that one word could explain a man's life. Her obsession with puzzles symbolized her frustration with trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle of Kane's life so she can understand and know her husband. It reminds him of that winter day when he was sledding in the snow before all was lost to him when his parents sent him away to be raised by a banker.

As a narrative device "Rosebud" became the focal point of the film without ever being revealed to the characters. She accuses him of not loving her, but of trying to bribe her into loving him like he bribes everyone else. Little did he know that "Rosebud" came to represent Kane's life. The snow globe is a metaphor for the sled and the day that his parents sent him away. The sled represents the childhood, innocence, and love that he lost and has not been able to recapture in his life. Rosebud then becomes a symbol of Kane feeling that he has never been loved. In the film, "Rosebud" was referred to as a missing piece of the puzzle of Kane's life. When his second wife Susan leaves him, the snow globe is the only thing he salvages after destroying her room in a rage. When asked what he found out about Kane, he says that Kane was a man who had everything and then lost it, and that maybe "Rosebud" was something he couldn't get or something he lost.

When Susan is living with him in the enormous mansion, Xanadu, she becomes obsessed with putting together jigsaw puzzles.
