Proponents of strict gun control laws argue that reducing the number of crimes committed with guns would save lives. Each year in the United States, more than 35,000 people are killed by a gun, a death rate much higher than in any other industrial nation. Attacks involving a gun are five times more likely to result in a death than similar attacks made with a knife. In 1992, guns were weapons used in approximately two-thirds of the murders in the United States. However, gun control laws are controversial. While gun control laws may decrease criminals' access to guns, the same laws restrict law-abiding citizens. About half of all United States, families own at least one gun. The most frequent motives for gun ownership are protecting the home, hunting or target shooting, and collecting. Gun control laws aim to reduce the criminal use of guns as much as possible while not putting large burdens on legitimate gun users.
The one out of four hundred gun owners who abuses his weapons should be punished, not the other 399. Indeed, cars kill 50,000 people a year. Many gun proponents say, that the protective purpose of gun ownership is served even when the gun is not brandish or used-that is, the knowledge that a household owners a gun may of itself keep felons away. There is some evidence from small communities that this is so, at least for a while after a public campaign for more gun ownership. However, the effect is usually short-lived. The more guns with which our society equips itself with, the greater the likelihood for accidents or violent acts involving firearms there will be. Each year, 1,200 people are killed in accidents involving handguns, and a handgun inures someone every two and a half minutes. More than 200,000 privately owned handguns are stolen annually. More guns in more hands will serve only to produce a false sense of security and even more dangerous sense of power Due !
