Massachusetts Bay
The year 1607 marked an important event in English history. Jamestown, the first colony in America, was set up on an inland peninsula of Chesapeake Bay by English people. Later, the Pilgrims' Mayflower reached by accident to a place called Massachusetts Bay, and settled in the town called Plymouth; that was 1620, about a decade after the settlements of Jamestown. Though these two areas were founded by English people, they had many differences and similarities in between. All in all, we can broadly classify them into 4 directions: Initial goals and characters of the colonies, early difficulties, colonial conflicts and the Royal policies toward them. For the Chesapeake Bay colonists, the initial goal of these people for expanding out of England is that they wanted to search for more wealth, fame and glory. In early 17th century, when King James I saw Spain's success in making reasonable profits in Caribbean islands, he granted a charter to a number of English merchants, gentlemen and aristocrats, who founded the Virginia Company for colonizing the Northern America. They hoped that through trading and exploring gold deposits in America, their dreams would somehow come true. Since the Spanish had occupied eastern America for settlem

As opposed to the commercial reasons of founding Jamestown, Puritans founded Salem because they were being persecuted by the Royal and Catholic Church power in England. Although the colonists in both areas were much different in prospect, they were still originated from England, sharing the same physical characteristics and inner traditions that made them distinguishable from the Spanish colonists in Caribbean Islands, French colonists in Northwest America and the native Indians during the 17th and 18th centuries. Nathaniel Bacon, a wealthy gentlemen who arrived Jamestown from England, united the poorer frontier neighbors to slaughter both friendly and hostile Indian tribes. Actually, when the Pilgrims first settled down at Plymouth, the Wampanoags tribe helped them to survive from malnutrition and diseases, otherwise it would become another doomed colony similar to the Roanoke military camp. Yet, the colonies were unprofitable and the wealth distribution were fairly equal, because weather in Mass!achusetts was not suitable to plant cash crops, allowing few chances for anyone to get rich through trades. The Navigation Acts, which was introduced by the Parliament in 1660, enabled England to have strict control over colonial trade first in Chesapeake and then in Massachusetts Colonies. About early difficulties, the Chesapeake was much harsher than Massachusetts. Frankly speaking, Jamestown could be a much better colony if it was not anchored in that part of Chesapeake, because the Powhatan Confederacy was based on there. No matter how far the ocean separated them from England, American colonies were still under control of the Royal family. For Chesapeake, perhaps the two most significant conflicts between colonists were Bacon's Rebellion in Jamestown and Coode's Rebellion in St. However, the reasons for founding Massachusetts Bay were much different than its Chesapeake counterpart; it was founded due to religious conflicts. Therefore, founding Salem was solely a religious purpose. Early settlements of Jamestown suffered from the oppositions of Indians, inadequate colonists, high mortality rates, uneven proportion between men and women, and inequality among the whites.
