Give Life

             Most of us never think of the one thing that we are so dependent on. The one thing that I'm referring to is blood. It flows through each and every person in the world without regard to race, financial status, or any other variable. It is because we all need blood that blood donation is so very important. We have got to become more aware of the need and more generous with this gift of life. The need is very great. Blood donation is literally life donation.
             Giving blood is really very simple, yet less than five percent of the eligible population gives blood regularly. The requirements are few for blood donors. You must be at least seventeen years old and you must weigh at least one hundred and ten pounds.
             The need for blood is urgent. All types of blood are needed every day because in the United States about forty thousand units of blood are used daily for various procedures. Statistics show that six out of every ten people in the United States will need a blood transfusion during their lifetime. There is no acceptable substitute for blood, so people willing to give blood are the only source of hope for those in need. One donation of blood can actually save as many as three lives. Each donation is separated into three products for use. These are red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. If the reason you haven't become a blood donor is because you have simply never recognized the need, then you need to think about the facts presented here. It should prove to you that donating blood is a worthy effort. You might also want to consider the fact that the next person to need blood may be you or a family member.
             Some people may have the mistaken idea that giving blood can involve some risk to them. That is simply not true.
