Child Abuse

If value that society places on its children can be measured by how well the young are treated, then the fact that more than three children die each day from physical abuse and neglect doesn't say much for the United States. The four categories of child maltreatment are physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional abuse. The rate of child abuse has fluctuated, and grown to an appalling level in the last ten years, and now that society realizes that it has become a serious problem, we are struggling to regain control of it.Child abuse encompasses a spectrum of abusive actions, from acts of commission, to lack of action or omission. Abuse can start even before the birth of the child, and can have adverse effects on the child. Such as maternal drug abuse and failure to seek appropriate prenatal health care during pregnancy (Why 1). Any type of child abuse will generally fall in to one of these four categories, each overlapping another. Physical abuse is the most prominent, followed by sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional abuse. Physical abuse is defined by children being slapped, hit, kicked, or shoved, or having objects thrown at them. Flesh wounds, broken bones, or other injuries are common. Se

Unlike physical abuse, violence is not common in sexual abuse. With a belief that early education of expectant mothers will help to prevent injury to children, PCAA and Healthy Families America offer instruction and support in prenatal care, parenting skills, household management, and coping with environmental dangers (Prevention 1). htm>"Why Child Abuse Occurs & Criminal Background of the Perpetrator. Sexual abuse includes oral-genital, genital-rectal, hand-genital, hand-rectal, or hand-breast contact, as well as showing pornography to a child or using a child in the production of pornography (2). The least recognized of the categories of abuse is em!otional abuse. Child protective services are making a difference, but they cannot single handedly harness the problem. All but one state have established a children's trust and prevention funds to support the development of some type of program designed to prevent all forms of maltreatment. A classic example of neglect would be the 1998 case of Karen Kuffer who brought her fifteen year old daughter the emergency room where she was pronounced dead, barely weighing sixteen pounds.
